Corrosion Can Occur In Multiple Places In Water Heaters. Here's The Problem Spots

Electric Elements

Galvanic corrosion is most common in electrical water heaters and appear on the electrical elements. The elements are the component that heats the water. Elements have a copper sheath and a steel base and if those specific parts become wet, electrolysis and corrosion may occur. An electrical element may be corroded enough to fail to heat the water. If you replace it and then in less than a year, the element may corrode again, then it is due to a faulty anode. Replacing the anode will prevent further element destruction. One way to prevent corrosion is to install galvanized unions with the plastic nipples on the top of the tank. Now you can thread galvanized pipe to the steel plumbing into the wall. Like galvanized plumbing, plastic plumbing will never have to deal with galvanic corrosion. PB and CPVC can adapt to most metal pipes.

Corrosion Caused By Softened Water

Softening water is the act of exchanging salt for hard minerals in water. Often the salt becomes more corrosive than the hard minerals. Softened water therefore consumes anode rods with greater ease. Anode rods inside softened tanks should be checked every two years, no more.

Anodes

Anode rods are very important to the heater's long-term health. Sometimes an anode rod develop a very hard covering of calcium carbonate on 100% of its surface. This layer prevents the anode from from stopping corrosion. The rod will look the same to the naked eye though. An anode that is covered in calcium carbonate will bend easily and that is the only way to tell.

Combustion Chambers

Combustion chambers in gas heaters have the potential to rust and corrode. To check the combustion chamber, first set the gas control to PILOT. Next remove the hatch cover. Now remove the draft diverter on top of the water heater along with the baffle. Using a flashlight, look inside the flue to make sure there is no water damage. If corrosion or rust appear, call a plumber for maintenance. Rust and corrosion can occur inside a commercial heater as well. If you have the tank drained, check the inside for rusting. If there is rusting, call the manufacturer.

Solar Systems

Touching briefly on solar systems, it should be known that solar water heating has come a long way since its inception in the 1800's. Almost all corrosion problems have been eliminated. Solar systems sometimes use a heat exchanger. These machines have a special oily heat exchange fluid inside. The fluid does not drain in cold weather because it does not freeze either. Corrosion however may occur in this situation and may need to be monitored in the colder seasons.

Vent Pipes

If you have a gas water heater, your vent pipes could be subject to corrosion. Your vent pipes are the piping system above the water heater that helps the combustible gases coming from the water heater to escape to the outside of your house. Do not operate on the venting system yourself since plumbing codes are extremely specific and abundant when it comes to your venting system. Just make sure you can't see any rusted holes anywhere on your vent pipes or a unburned natural gas may escape through the holes. Call a plumber if you find this problem.

Corrosion Resistant Materials To The Rescue

If you're concerned with corrosion problems in the tank lining itself, many tank linings are created out of metals besides steel (which corrodes) and instead are made out of copper, stainless steel plastic, or cement. These materials are better than the usual steel and glass lining found on most water heaters manufactured still today. Ask manufacturers for tanks lined with materials other than glass and steel if at all possible.

Just why are some metals coated with chromium? That is something I had always wondered and I guessed it had something to do with corrosion and rust protection. But why not make the item out of solid chromium to begin with?

For starters, some metals are coated with chromium to make them look more attractive. Chromium is shiny and sparkly ? it is a good reflector and is bright. The metal is silver in appearance and can enhance all types of objects that it coats. And , sure, it certainly does protect from corrosion and tarnish.

It was discovered in 1798 and is a non-corrosive material which is very strong and resistant to heat. It is ideal for coating other metals in particular steel.

The coating process is done by electroplating ? immersing the object in an electrolyte solution and passing an electric current through it. This is the only way it is done ? there is no other reliable method and all other descriptions (such as "Chrome Dipping" and "Chroming") refer to electroplating methods. The electrolyte contains chromium in a different form but the chromium is displaced onto the desired object during the electroplating process.

You will see chromium plating in lots of different places and in particular on appliances around the home (for example, taps) and on automobile and motorcycle parts. Other places you might find it commonly is in the tool shed ? on tools of all kinds, and on electrical equipment. Virtually every object that is chromium plated is enhanced by its presence and can be polished up to a pleasing shine.

Ford Tests Vehicles for Long-Term Corrosion Resistance


In North America, the Ford Motor Company has started checking and testing their vehicles for long-term corrosion and rust resistance. This is done in the hot and dry climate of Arizona. Aside from this feat, the company is also testing their vehicles for the mentioned resistance not only in hot climates but also for a cold one.

Jeffrey Helms is the manager of the Materials and Development Release in the Ford Global Paint Engineering department. He says about corrosion, ?There isn?t much corrosion below freezing. Actually, the worst thing you can do your vehicle in the winter is to park it in your garage. When it warms up, the ice turns to water and carries road salt into various nooks and crannies where it starts to go to work on the vehicle?s coating if it is not properly protected.?

The entire testing is done at the Ford Motor Company?s Arizona Proving Ground (APG). The process of testing and checking is done through a more effective way of distributing the salt in and around the vehicle?s exterior. What the testing center actually uses is a high pressure salt spray. Helms states, ?Every so often, as part of our overall vehicle durability testing at APG, a car or a truck is driven into a special chamber where it is exposed to salt spray. With an accelerated test schedule, we can simulate years of customer use in just a few months.?

Of course, the tests that the APG uses are laboratory methods that have been sanctioned by the Society of Automotive Engineers. These methods are facilitated so as to be able to analyze the corrosion protection of individual components of these Ford vehicles.

Commotion with Corrosion


This is not another boring science topic that will put you off to sleep. Trust me, I'll make this as simple and as interesting read as possible.

Corrosion's dictionary meaning is synonymous to a list of words like rusting, corroding, erosion, a chemical process, a chemical change, a chemical action a natural activity, deterioration of metals through the process of oxidation or chemical action.

Whew!

To explain it further, corrosion is defined as the wearing away of materials in a slow blow by blow process. It does not literally pertain to the destruction of metals and other related materials.

Corrosion is then followed by reversion to a more subtle and balanced pairs or combination where metals are known as the most popular examples. Corrosion, in short, is the opposite of metallurgy.

Because while metallurgy is the molding and making of metals, corrosion on the other hand, is the rusting, corroding and unmaking of metals caused by a chemical reaction between the metal and its external faculties which makes up its environment.

Corrosion, in its broadest studies are subdivided into a number of categories with each type processing a different characteristic from the other.

But for a more comprehensive study and understanding of corrosion, scientist have specifically classified corrosion into 2 general and most known types and methods in which the process of unmaking the metals can take place.

The first of which is "typified corrosion" whereby metal iron is exposed to its external agencies during which the temperature is high or eleveated. During typified corrosion, the corroding and rusting of the metal begins as soon as the oxygen in the atmosphere to produce 'mill scale', a common product formed whenever oxygen reacts with its surroundings.

Mill scale and magnetite, which plays a vital role in the method of typified corrosion, contains the same chemical composition called iron ores.

Other forms of metals behave in the same way when associated to its external environment, they also produce varieties of oxides and may have the tendency to behave in the similar manner to come up with other compounds.

All of these chemical reaction and activity points to summarize that the result of direct combination between the given reacting elements results to products of corrosion, and does not plainly embody the end product formed through the substitution of or displacement of an element for or by another element.

However, the second type and method of corrosion is referred to as "galvanic" corrosion or "electrochemical corrosion".

This method is characterized by the process of displacement of one given element in one phase (usually in the form of alloy or metal). And since electric current is the focal point of the variable displacement of one given element by the other given element, literally defining the very meaning of galvanic or electrochemical corrosion.

Furthermore, electrochemical corrosion generally refers to cases of corrosion in which metal or alloy being rusted is continuously associated and linked with the corrosion-causing solution, or another given element that is a dissimilar metal or may also be some different conducting or solid material.

The term electrochemical corrosion may also be used in cases when either pure metal, impure metals, or other forms of metal or alloys are exposed to pure water, aqueous solution of water soluble materials, or different mixtures of water with other elements which is both not soluble nor a solvent of water.

Corrosion will not take place in the absence of corrosion cells. In a more simplified situation, it's like a cheeseburger without cheese. Before such corrosion cells do their function, some pre-requisites must be met.

First requirement is for cells to have doors to connect two points, the metal and the solution, to allow the flow of electric current to and from each other in the metal surface.

Second, the cell must be capable of electric conductivity. And lastly, there must be a motivating force or 'push' that will enable the initiation (first step), and maintenance (second step) of flow of current all throughout the system.
